Here's Why We Think IDT (NYSE:IDT) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

Simply Wall St.

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like IDT (NYSE:IDT). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide IDT with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

How Fast Is IDT Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Even with very modest growth rates, a company will usually do well if it improves earnings per share (EPS) year after year. So EPS growth can certainly encourage an investor to take note of a stock. Outstandingly, IDT's EPS shot from US$1.46 to US$3.19, over the last year. It's a rarity to see 118% year-on-year growth like that.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. It seems IDT is pretty stable, since revenue and EBIT margins are pretty flat year on year. That's not bad, but it doesn't point to ongoing future growth, either.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check IDT's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.

Are IDT Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. IDT followers will find comfort in knowing that insiders have a significant amount of capital that aligns their best interests with the wider shareholder group. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$224m. That equates to 19% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. Looking very optimistic for investors.

While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. For companies with market capitalisations between US$400m and US$1.6b, like IDT, the median CEO pay is around US$3.4m.

The CEO of IDT only received US$1.1m in total compensation for the year ending July 2024. First impressions seem to indicate a compensation policy that is favourable to shareholders. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Is IDT Worth Keeping An Eye On?

IDT's earnings per share have been soaring, with growth rates sky high. The sweetener is that insiders have a mountain of stock, and the CEO remuneration is quite reasonable. The sharp increase in earnings could signal good business momentum. IDT certainly ticks a few boxes, so we think it's probably well worth further consideration. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for IDT (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that you need to take into consideration.

There's always the possibility of doing well buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares.
