If EPS Growth Is Important To You, StoneCo (NASDAQ:STNE) Presents An Opportunity

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in StoneCo (NASDAQ:STNE). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

StoneCo's Improving Profits

StoneCo has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Outstandingly, StoneCo's EPS shot from R$3.26 to R$6.94, over the last year. It's a rarity to see 113% year-on-year growth like that.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. It's noted that StoneCo's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. While we note StoneCo achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 14% to R$12b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are StoneCo Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. So it is good to see that StoneCo insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth R$103m. Holders should find this level of insider commitment quite encouraging, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience their success, or failure, with the stock.

Is StoneCo Worth Keeping An Eye On?

StoneCo's earnings have taken off in quite an impressive fashion. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders should certainly brighten the view of the company. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So at the surface level, StoneCo is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies. You should always think about risks though.
