Investors who take an interest in Clarivate Plc (NYSE:CLVT) should definitely note that the Independent Director, Saurabh Saha, recently paid US$4.36 per share to buy US$254k worth of the stock. That certainly has us anticipating the best, especially since they thusly increased their own holding by 245%, potentially signalling some real optimism.

Notably, that recent purchase by Saurabh Saha is the biggest insider purchase of Clarivate shares that we've seen in the last year. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$4.20 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock when an insider has bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. Saurabh Saha was the only individual insider to buy during the last year. Notably Saurabh Saha was also the biggest seller.

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Insiders own 0.9% of Clarivate shares, worth about US$27m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of Clarivate we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future.
