Oil prices were roughly flat Tuesday--but oil companies lost some ground.
Hess, Chevron, Valero and Exxon Mobil all finished in the red.
The story was different for natural gas, where the front-month contract gained 5.5% Tuesday on Canada-U.S. trade tension.
Energy companies with big natural-gas exposure, such as EQT and Coterra, marked solid rises.
