Smart Sand's (NASDAQ:SND) Soft Earnings Don't Show The Whole Picture

Shareholders appeared unconcerned with Smart Sand, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:SND) lackluster earnings report last week. We think that the softer headline numbers might be getting counterbalanced by some positive underlying factors.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Importantly, our data indicates that Smart Sand's profit was reduced by US$2.4m, due to unusual items, over the last year. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. In the twelve months to December 2024, Smart Sand had a big unusual items expense. All else being equal, this would likely have the effect of making the statutory profit look worse than its underlying earnings power.

That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.

An Unusual Tax Situation

Just as we noted the unusual items, we must inform you that Smart Sand received a tax benefit which contributed US$2.7m to the bottom line. This is meaningful because companies usually pay tax rather than receive tax benefits. The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. In the likely event the tax benefit is not repeated, we'd expect to see its statutory profit levels drop, at least in the absence of strong growth.

Our Take On Smart Sand's Profit Performance

In the last year Smart Sand received a tax benefit, which boosted its profit in a way that might not be much more sustainable than turning prime farmland into gas fields. Having said that, it also had a unusual item reducing its profit. Considering the aforementioned, we think that Smart Sand's profits are probably a reasonable reflection of its underlying profitability; although we'd be confident in that conclusion if we saw a cleaner set of results. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. For example, we've found that Smart Sand has 4 warning signs (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that deserve your attention before going any further with your analysis.

Our examination of Smart Sand has focussed on certain factors that can make its earnings look better than they are. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company.
