Rio Tinto Group (ASX:RIO) held the first roundtable meeting to address findings from the Panguna Mine Legacy Impact Assessment Report in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on March 6, according to a Monday statement by the company.
The roundtable among the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG), Bougainville Copper, and Rio Tinto agreed on the need for additional investigations to address the most critical impacts identified in the report, to be submitted to an oversight committee comprised of the Government of Papua New Guinea, the ABG, Bougainville Copper, Rio Tinto, and the Human Rights Law Centre.
The roundtable focuses on the long-term environmental and social impacts of the Panguna Mine disaster, which led to the Bougainville Civil War, a conflict that claimed around 20,000 lives. The Rio Tinto-led initiative aims to implement remedial measures to address the mine's legacy issues.
The parties involved are also addressing ageing infrastructure and other priority issues highlighted by the report, per the statement.
