Credit: DISNEY“They’ve been going through the motions on Snow White, all but saying, ‘We need to get this thing over with,’” an exhibition source has told the respected publication THR.So, how did it get to this and what went wrong?According to multiple reports, anti-woke outrage has played a major part, especially in President Trump’s new world order.Lead actress Rachel Zegler has been dismissive of the original 1937 film saying it was “extremely dated when it comes to the ideas of women being in roles of power”.She also noted Snow White’s prince “literally stalks her” and responded to the concerns about the film being too politically correct (PC) by saying: “People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it’s like, yeah, it is — because it needed that.”Did it though?Why remake a film if you don’t like the original?There’s an ongoing theory that if you “go woke” then “you go broke” and there have been many examples of that being true.Forbes reports Disney’s Little Mermaid live action reboot suffered a $5 million loss.While online experts will dispute this based on a global box office of $570 million, against a budget of $250 million, Forbes reports the real budget soared to $355.1 million.“It is widely accepted that studios receive around half of the theatre takings with exhibitors retaining the remainder” the outlet said, which would account for the $5 million deficit.Adding to this is the fact other Disney live action remakes have had greater success. The Lion King brought in $1.7 billion in 2019 and Aladdin $1 billion the same year.There are claims some of the backlash over The Little Mermaid was the casting of an African American actress in the role of Ariel and, it should be noted, conservative voices in the US are upset over the casting of a person of colour in the role of Snow White.Halle Bailey played the title role in Disney’s live action remake of The Little Mermaid Credit: DISNEYSo, there’s no doubt racism plays a part for some.I watched the trailer for Snow White again this morning and actually enjoyed it — ignoring the noise of what the lead actress might say and “controversy” over Israeli actor Gal Gadot, who plays the evil queen in the new movie, being an outspoken supporter of Israel during its war in Gaza.Actors can have their own motivations for how they play a role but ultimately the movie comes down to the script and how the director interprets it.Let’s see how this one plays out, both in terms of a movie experience and box office takings.NINE CONFIRMS NEW CEOIt’s hard to believe it’s almost been six months since Matt Stanton was appointed Nine’s Acting Chief Executive Officer.Today, the entertainment giant finally confirmed Stanton would take up the position permanently.Media observers have been very confused as to why the board has taken so long to confirm the appointment, especially considering Stanton has been making big decisions regarding the future of the company and had to deal with the fallout of the Intersection Report which exposed allegations of bullying and sexual assault across the company.The company is currently contemplating its future with a possible sale of real estate website Domain.While a sale wasn’t on the table, Nine is taking the offer seriously.As for reports about a sale of Nine Radio, INSIDE MEDIA understands while it shouldn’t be ruled out, it does not appear to be a priority for the company despite media reports to the contrary.Now that Stanton officially has the keys to the company, let’s see what happens next.WAS CYCLONE ALFRED COVERAGE OVER THE TOP?Much has been made of the coverage our television networks broadcast during Cyclone Alfred.Some have mocked what they see as over-hyping what was essentially a “fizzer” but as someone living on the Gold Coast I appreciated the rolling coverage and constant updates.Cyclone Alfred coverage on ABC, Seven, Nine and 10 (as shown on Media Watch) Credit: ABCIn the early stages we lost power at our home and then the internet was out.Television coverage gave us reliable information – it wasn’t overhyped, it was helpful.To those who think Cyclone Alfred was a fizzer, you obviously didn’t have food going off, flooding or damage. Lucky for you, but others weren’t so lucky.My sincere thanks to all the journalists, camera operators, producers etc. who provided a much needed service during this event.FEWER PEOPLE MEDIA WATCHINGLike him or loathe him there’s no doubt Paul Barry was a powerful, polarising figure as the host of Media Watch until last year when he quite the ABC hosting gig.Linton Besser is the new host of Media Watch, which has seen an 11 per cent decrease in ratings in 2025. Credit: ABCUnfortunately for his replacement, Linton Besser, a lot of viewers seems to have left the show with Barry.Figures obtained by INSIDE MEDIA reveal Media Watch has suffered an 11 decline on broadcast television this year in both metro and regional markets.The show now averages 586,000 nationally, compared with 656,000 last year.Adelaide has seen the biggest decline of any market, falling 17 per cent year on year.And just to note I have no issue with the show — I’m one of the few people to have appeared on Media Watch multiple times in a positive light, offering insights.In fact, I was featured in the first episode of 2025 talking about the closure of Nine’s Darwin newsroom.Basically, I have no vendetta against the show.A change of host is always a challenge for any program, so it will be interesting to see how Besser goes over time.Rob McKnight is a television producer and the co-owner of TV BlackboxINSIDE MEDIA is published every Monday and Thursday on the 7NEWS website.","kind":"highlight","is_publish_news":true,"is_publish_highlight":false,"is_publish_live":false,"is_publish_wemedia":null,"editions":null,"column":"","sentiment":"0","news_tag":"","news_rank":0,"symbols":[],"gpt_button":0}}}
