When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. Long term Alkermes plc (NASDAQ:ALKS) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 136% in five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 10% gain in the last three months.
Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the five years of share price growth, Alkermes moved from a loss to profitability. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. We can see that the Alkermes share price is up 30% in the last three years. During the same period, EPS grew by 69% each year. This EPS growth is higher than the 9% average annual increase in the share price over the same three years. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat.

It is of course excellent to see how Alkermes has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. This free interactive report on Alkermes' balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.
We've already covered Alkermes' share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. We note that Alkermes' TSR, at 140% is higher than its share price return of 136%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.
It's good to see that Alkermes has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 16% in the last twelve months. However, that falls short of the 19% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Alkermes better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 1 warning sign for Alkermes you should be aware of.
