If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at VNET Group (NASDAQ:VNET) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for VNET Group:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.029 = CN¥669m ÷ (CN¥32b - CN¥9.3b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).

Thus, VNET Group has an ROCE of 2.9%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the IT industry average of 9.8%.

What Can We Tell From VNET Group's ROCE Trend?

While in absolute terms it isn't a high ROCE, it's promising to see that it has been moving in the right direction. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 2.9%. The amount of capital employed has increased too, by 135%. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at VNET Group thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.

The Key Takeaway

To sum it up, VNET Group has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. Astute investors may have an opportunity here because the stock has declined 12% in the last five years. With that in mind, we believe the promising trends warrant this stock for further investigation.
