Southwest Airlines Lowers First-Quarter Fuel Cost Estimate -- OPIS

Dow Jones
03-13

Southwest Airlines lowered its forecast for first-quarter 2025 fuel costs, according to a filing with the SEC earlier this week.

The airline now expects fuel to cost $2.35-2.45/gal on average over the first three months of the year as opposed to the previous estimate of $2.50-2.60/gal.

The revised outlook also shows a 7ct/gal premium from hedging expenses.

The SEC filing cites lower capacity estimates, "a higher-than-expected completion factor, less government travel, and a greater impact from the California wildfires than originally estimated," as well as "softness in bookings and demand as the macro environment has weakened."

Earlier this week, JetBlue also lowered its fuel cost estimates for the first quarter.
