Shares of Coherent gained after the optoelectronics company said it would collaborate with chip company Nvidia on silicon photonics networking switches.

Coherent stock was trading 6% higher, at $69.35, midday Wednesday. The shares are up 20% over the last year.

The Saxonburg, Pa., company said Tuesday the Nvidia collaboration would use co-packaged optics. Coherent added that the ecosystem would allow artificial-intelligence factories to connect millions of graphics processing units, or GPUs.

Chief Executive Jim Anderson said the company expects co-packaged optics will further accelerate the expansion of optical networking in the data center.
