According to CDG, the programme is part of the group’s broader strategy to explore autonomous transport solutions.

ComfortDelGro $(CDG.AU)$ has launched a two-year robotaxi programme with autonomous vehicle (AV) technology company Pony.ai on March 17.

The pilot programme, which comes after the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between both parties in August 2024, will allow CDG to develop and refine capabilities for AV technology operations and fleet management.

According to CDG, the programme is part of the group’s broader strategy to explore autonomous transport solutions. Following this programme, the group also intends to work towards future large-scale deployment in China and other international markets.

“The development of autonomous vehicle technology is crucial in future-proofing the transport industry. With continuing driver shortages a global issue, we are exploring innovative solutions to ensure mobility remains accessible and efficient,” says Cheng Siak Kian managing director and group CEO of CDG.

“Autonomous technology can complement the human driver workforce by increasing ride availability during off peak hours and in underserved areas. This pilot will allow us to build operational capabilities in robotaxis, and a step closer to wider future deployment,” he adds.

“With good progress from the last few years, Pony.ai has accumulated strong expertise in autonomous driving technology and operational platforms in managing robotaxi services, with more vehicle productions underway,” says Leo Wang, CFO of Pony.ai, who adds that the company needs “strong partners” like CDG to support its goal of expanding globally.

As at 3.45pm, shares in CDG are trading 2 cents lower or 1.4% down at $1.41.
