ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited's (SGX:C52) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to SGD0.0425 on 14th of May. This makes the dividend yield 5.3%, which is above the industry average.

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, ComfortDelGro's dividend was making up a very large proportion of earnings and perhaps more concerning was that it was 221% of cash flows. Paying out such a high proportion of cash flows can expose the business to needing to cut the dividend if the business runs into some challenges.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 30.4%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 58%, which would make us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend, despite the levels currently being quite high.

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of SGD0.0775 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of SGD0.0777. Dividend payments have been growing, but very slowly over the period. The dividend has seen some fluctuations in the past, so even though the dividend was raised this year, we should remember that it has been cut in the past.
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. ComfortDelGro has seen earnings per share falling at 4.5% per year over the last five years. If the company is making less over time, it naturally follows that it will also have to pay out less in dividends. Earnings are forecast to grow over the next 12 months and if that happens we could still be a little bit cautious until it becomes a pattern.
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The track record isn't great, and the payments are a bit high to be considered sustainable. We don't think ComfortDelGro is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
