Theater Operators Need More Movies, Longer Screening Times to Boost Traffic -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

1238 ET - Cinema operators want to extend theatrical windows back toward 60 days as the number of habitual moviegoers slides, Benchmark analyst Mike Hickey says. Theater operators argue that the current 17- to 30-day movie-screening window is too short and undermines box office sales, as ticket revenue is down 24% from pre-Covid levels, Hickey says. North America has lost nearly 5,700 movie screens since the pandemic, and many theater chains are trying to integrate other forms of entertainment like bowling and arcade games to offset the slower slate of new film screenings. But to drive weekly attendance, volume consistency is more important than occasional blockbusters, Hickey says.(katherine.hamilton@wsj.com)
