TCL Electronics Holdings Limited (HKG:1070) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 30th of July to HK$0.318. This takes the annual payment to 3.6% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that TCL Electronics Holdings' stock price has increased by 43% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Prior to this announcement, TCL Electronics Holdings' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 39.5% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 35% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The dividend has gone from an annual total of HK$0.0528 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of HK$0.318. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 20% per annum over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. It's not great to see that TCL Electronics Holdings' earnings per share has fallen at approximately 2.7% per year over the past five years. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this can turn into a longer term trend.
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
