It has lost nine per cent in its last five trading days.Investors had braced for Monday’s fall after futures suggested a 4.3 per cent fall.Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Ten of the index’s 11 sectors were trading in the red, with energy, mining and tech stocks leading the losses. The only winning sector was consumer staples, home to the likes of supermarket groups Coles and Woolworths, which are seen as safer, defensive stocks in times of market volatility.The biggest losers included stocks exposed to the US, such as buy now, pay later group Zip Co, which surrendered 14 per cent, or those with big US sales but offshore factories facing the tariff hikes, like appliance maker Breville, which lost more than 10 per cent before a quick rebound.Energy stocks have been hit by the sharp retreat in oil prices as markets worry that less of the commodity will be used in a slowing global economy. Having been hammered last week, Woodside Energy was down another eight per cent in Monday trading.Commonwealth Bank was 8.5 per cent lower, while mining majors BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals were all down between five per cent and 8.5 per cent. Chris Ellison’s already hard-hit Mineral Resources had lost nearly 10 per cent.The market’s sharp retreat comes after US benchmark the S&P 500 lodged its biggest weekly drop since March 2020 on Friday and the tech-focused Nasdaq composite ended down more than 20 per cent from its December record high — confirming the index is in a bear market.Tariff-stunned markets face another week of potential turmoil, with fallout from Mr Trump’s sweeping import levies keeping investors on edge after the worst week for US stocks since the onset of the coronavirus crisis five years ago.More volatility across global markets could be in store ahead of the April 9 deadline Mr Trump set for his reciprocal tariffs to take effect, after last Wednesday’s announcement of the levies sent markets into a tailspin, raising fears of a global recession.The Australian dollar is already in a nosedive, falling under $US60¢ to a fresh five-year low after beginning weekend trading by falling from near $U63¢.Loading TweetWith China launching retaliatory levies against the US, heightening investor fears about a disastrous trade war, the S&P 500 collapsed 6 per cent on Friday to lead the biggest two days of losses by major US equity markets since the height of COVID-18 in 2020.The S&P-ASX200 began Monday already in correction territory, having lost just over 10 per cent since February’s record high and Mr Trump’s ramp-up of retaliatory pursuits against more than 60 US trading partners.In the US, the S&P 500 is dangerously close to entering a bear market, down 17.5 per cent since its peak in mid-February, while the tech-heavy NASDAQ 100 is already there after Friday’s 6.1 per cent drop.However, Mr Trump is showing no signs of backing down, posting on his Truth Social platform after Friday’s market carnage that his country’s trading partners had treated the US as “a dumb and helpless whipping post, but not any longer”.“Hang tough,” he urged his supporters, “it won’t be easy but the end result will be historic”.However, Pepperstone head of research Chris Weston said Mr Trump and his Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent are playing a dangerous game, “especially when equity and corporate credit reflect increasing recession and default risk – relief to one’s debt serviceability matters little if you’ve lost your job”.“Clearly, the longer the current tariff rates remain in place the greater the impact on inflation, and deterioration in business confidence and subsequently the higher the probability that Trump’s tariff policy will be seen as responsible for causing a US and possibly global recession,” Mr Weston said.“While we’ve seen a number of (exporting) nations making moves to have their tariff rate taken down, the market is far more sensitive to news and moves that involve China, Europe, the UK and Japan,” he said.","kind":"highlight","is_publish_news":true,"is_publish_highlight":false,"is_publish_live":false,"is_publish_wemedia":null,"editions":null,"column":"","sentiment":"-2","news_tag":"","news_rank":0,"symbols":[],"gpt_button":0,"code":"91000000","status":"200"}}}
