It's not possible to invest over long periods without making some bad investments. But really bad investments should be rare. So spare a thought for the long term shareholders of AEM Holdings Ltd. (SGX:AWX); the share price is down a whopping 78% in the last three years. That would be a disturbing experience. And over the last year the share price fell 56%, so we doubt many shareholders are delighted. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 40% in the last 90 days.

Since AEM Holdings has shed S$94m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

AEM Holdings became profitable within the last five years. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So it's worth looking at other metrics to try to understand the share price move.

Arguably the revenue decline of 29% per year has people thinking AEM Holdings is shrinking. After all, if revenue keeps shrinking, it may be difficult to find earnings growth in the future.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. A Different Perspective

Investors in AEM Holdings had a tough year, with a total loss of 56%, against a market gain of about 12%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 7% per year over five years.
