Dollar Likely to Stay Stable Vs. Asian Currencies on U.S., China Tariffs -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

0310 GMT - The dollar is likely to stay stable against Asian currencies on the U.S. and China tariffs, as stronger regional currencies would hurt exports, Goldman Sachs's economics research team says in a report. "USD/CNY will provide an important anchor for Asian currencies," the team says. Also, Asian central banks are unlikely to favor substantially stronger currencies against the dollar to maintain export competitiveness, it says. However, GS sees room for some differentiation within USD/Asian currency pairs. The Philippine peso could outperform as the Philippines is a more domestically driven economy, with less exposure to goods trade with the U.S., GS says. USD/PHP is steady at 57.35.
