Australia turned down China's proposal to collaborate against US tariffs as it looks at diversifying its international trade and reducing its reliance on China, Reuters reported Thursday, citing Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles during an interview with Sky News.
Xiao Qian, the Chinese ambassador to Australia, proposed in an opinion column in The Age that the Australian government, along with the international community, should "join hands" with Beijing to defend its global trade, the report said.
The statement was made after US President Donald Trump announced that he would raise tariffs against Chinese goods to 125% from 104%, the report said.
