When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. Long term Globe International Limited (ASX:GLB) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 171% in five years. In contrast, the stock has fallen 8.6% in the last 30 days. This could be related to the soft market, with stocks down around 1.3% in the last month.
So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, Globe International achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 7.7% per year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 22% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Globe International's TSR for the last 5 years was 259%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
It's good to see that Globe International has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 27% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 29% per year, is even more impressive. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Globe International is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those shouldn't be ignored...
