Tenstorrent plans to expand its Japan-based engineering team from 15 to over 100 by year-end as it prepares to take on chip design contracts in the country, Nikkei reported Friday, citing CEO Jim Keller.

The Toronto-based semiconductor design firm is training Japanese engineers at its US sites with support from Japan's industry ministry. It also plans to send staff to Rapidus' Hokkaido plant ahead of prototype production set for July or August, the report said.

Tenstorrent, founded in 2016, is considering outsourcing manufacturing to Rapidus. It received $693 million in funding from Jeff Bezos in December, according to the report.
