1254 ET - After low activity last year, the biggest network carriers are seeing higher churn and a slight pickup in upgrades in the first quarter, UBS analysts said in a research note. T-Mobile adds 540,000 new phone subscribers in the quarter, up from 485,000 a year ago, while Verizon narrows its loss to 222,000 from 328,000 a year ago. AT&T adds slightly fewer phone subs. The industry's stronger activity stems from higher prices while customers rushed to buy before Trump's impending tariffs, pulling forward demand, the analysts said. Those dynamics won't last, though, with higher phone prices set to cool churn and upgrades later in the year, supporting carrier profits, the analysts said. (kelly.cloonan@wsj.com)
