China EV Insurance Registrations for Week Ending Apr 27: Nio 6,500, Onvo 1,470, Tesla 10,280, BYD 62,200

Major electric vehicle (EV) makers generally saw insurance registrations in China rise last week, as deliveries are typically higher at the end of the month.

For the week of April 21-27 - week 17 of 2025 - Nio branded vehicles saw insurance registrations of 6,500 units in China, up 20.37 percent from 5,400 units the week before, according to figures shared by multiple auto industry watchers on Weibo today.

For the past two years, Li Auto has typically shared the previous week's sales figures for major EV makers in rankings every Tuesday. It has stopped doing that as a response to a March 18 call from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

Nio's sub-brand Onvo recorded insurance registrations of 1,470 units last week, up 90.91 percent from 770 units the previous week.

Nio Inc, which includes the Nio and Onvo brands, had 7,970 insurance registrations in China last week, up 29.17 percent from 6,170 the previous week.

Nio's third brand, Firefly, launched its first model on April 19 and deliveries are set to begin today.

Nio Inc delivered 15,039 vehicles in March, up 26.74 percent from 11,866 in the same month last year and up 14 percent from 13,192 in February, according to data it announced on April 1.

The deliveries included 10,219 vehicles under the Nio main brand and 4,820 vehicles under Onvo.

Xpeng had 7,160 insurance registrations last week, up 8.48 percent from 6,600 the week before.

The company delivered 33,205 vehicles in March, the fifth consecutive month with more than 30,000 units, according to figures it announced on April 1.

Earlier today, Xpeng announced that it saw its 50,000th P7+ roll off the line, about five months after the launch of the mid-to-large-size electric sedan.

Li Auto had 8,600 insurance registrations last week, down 2.49 percent from 8,820 the week before.

The company began pre-sales of the updated Li L6 SUV (sport utility vehicle), Li Mega MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) on April 23, the first day of the 2025 Shanghai auto show, and will begin taking firm orders on May 8.

Tesla had 10,280 insurance registrations in China last week, up 51.62 percent from 6,780 the week before.

Tesla sold 74,127 vehicles in China's domestic market in March, up 18.80 percent from 62,398 in the same month a year ago and up 176.83 percent from 26,777 in February, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Yesterday, rumors surfaced that Tesla may begin production of a three-row seating version of the Model Y with an extended wheelbase after Labor Day holiday.

China's upcoming Labor Day holiday is May 1-5.

BYD had 62,200 insurance registrations last week, up 10.87 percent from 56,100 the week before.

The company sold 377,420 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in March, up 24.78 percent year-on-year and 16.90 percent from February.

BYD broke ground yesterday on its passenger car plant in Cambodia, with the first phase expected to start production in the fourth quarter of this year and a planned annual capacity of 10,000 units.

Xiaomi had 7,000 insurance registrations last week, down 2.23 percent from 7,160 the week before.

Previously active on social media, Xiaomi founder, chairman and CEO Lei Jun has rarely spoken on his social media accounts over the past month.

The Zeekr brand registered 3,530 insurance registrations last week, up 33.21 percent from 2,650 the week before.

Zeekr Group's Zeekr and Lynk & Co brands delivered a total of 40,715 vehicles in March, a 30.18 percent increase over February and a 24.58 percent increase in combined deliveries from the same month last year.

The Zeekr brand delivered 15,422 vehicles in March, an increase of 18.52 percent year-on-year and up 9.85 percent from February.
