知情人士说，力拓和嘉能可最近就交易进行了初步阶段的磋商。由于讨论机密信息，知情人士要求匿名。目前尚不清楚磋商是否仍在进行。

力拓是全球第二大矿业公司，市值约为1,030亿美元，嘉能可市值为550亿美元。这两家公司合并可能会打造出一家行业巨头，超越长期以来的行业领头羊必和必拓集团，后者市值约1,260亿美元。
