TEMPO.CO, JakartaGeneral Chair of the Labor Party, Said Iqbal, has called upon President-elect Prabowo Subianto to review the Job Creation Law (UU Cipta Kerja), or Omnibus Law. He emphasized the need for a specific review of the employment cluster within the regulation.

He conveyed this message during a press conference at Istora Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, while expressing his hopes for the welfare of workers and the working class. “We implore, request, and expect a review of the Omnibus Law, particularly the employment cluster,” he said.

Since its passage by the House of Representatives (DPR) on October 5, 2022, Law Number 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation has sparked controversy in society, especially among workers and grassroots activists. This is evident in the numerous mass demonstrations organized by the working class.

Several aspects of the Job Creation Law have been criticized for their perceived bias and neglect of worker protection, despite the stated aim of supporting investment. Consequently, public opposition has been persistent since its inception.

In addition to reviewing the Omnibus Law, the Labor Party is also demanding an increase in the minimum wage to a decent and productive level, to be implemented in 2025. The party further advocates for the permanent elimination of outsourcing and the prevalence of low wages in Indonesia.

Moreover, the President of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) addressed agrarian reform, food sovereignty, the appointment of teachers and honorary workers as State Civil Apparatus (ASN), and the provision of free education, particularly up to the university level.

Said Iqbal further expressed optimism that at least the employment cluster within the Job Creation Law could be a focus during the Prabowo-Gibran leadership. “We are hopeful that Pak Prabowo will consider this when he is inaugurated on October 20, 2024,” he said, believing that the six key points could be realized within the first three months or one hundred days of Prabowo's presidency, succeeding President Joko Widodo or Jokowi. “It's a matter of belief,” he concluded.
