自 2013 年关闭的核电站被 12 英尺高的风暴潮淹没
废水溢出，但不太可能发生重大泄漏
据佛罗里达州环境保护部提交的一份文件显示，飓风“海伦妮”带来的洪水淹没了一座已退役的杜克能源公司核电站，尽管受污染燃料外泄的可能性不大。
根据这份在线发布的文件，自 2013 年以来已关闭的水晶河核电站经历了高达 12 英尺的风暴潮。
“整个场地都被淹没了，包括建筑物、集水坑和电梯。#5号 废水池被观测到溢出地面，”周五即海伦妮登陆后的第二天提交的报告显示。
报告称：“我们仍在获取访问权限和评估损害，但由于此次事件的性质，我们预计很难估计废水的总排放量，目前影响尚不清楚。”
杜克公司的一位代表没有立即回应置评请求。
该设施位于锡达礁以南，仍在拆除过程中。忧思科学家联盟的核专家埃德温·莱曼在一封电子邮件中表示，现场干式储存的乏燃料很可能是安全的。
“可能还有相当多的低放射性废物等待装运，现场废水的放射性污染程度可能很低，”莱曼在一封电子邮件中说。“虽然一切皆有可能，但根据福岛的经验，如果储存区短时间浸入水中，不太可能发生重大损坏或罐体泄漏。”
据《新闻周刊》报道，2023 年飓风伊达利亚登陆后，该场址还被洪水淹没，而乏燃料原计划将留在场址直到 2037 年。
