1. Stackable bonus categories for up to 9% back

Many people (myself included) have thought that the Chase Freedom Flex® earns up to 5% back. And if you look at its cash back rates, that would seem to be the case:

  • 5% back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter you activate
  • 5% back on travel purchased through Chase Travel
  • 3% back on dining at restaurants, including takeout and orders through eligible delivery services
  • 3% back at drugstores
  • 1% back on other purchases

It's actually even better. This card's rotating bonus categories sometimes overlap with its regular bonus categories. When they do, you earn even more bonus cash back.

For example, in the second quarter of 2024, the quarterly bonus categories are hotels, restaurants, and Amazon.com. When you activate those, you earn 5% in them, up to the quarterly maximum of $1,500.

But you can also book hotels through Chase Travel, which is another of this card's 5% categories. If you do, you'll earn 9% back. Here's how it works:

  • This card's base rate is 1% back.
  • In rotating bonus categories, it earns an additional 4% back (for 5% total).
  • On travel purchased through Chase Travel, it earns an additional 4% back (for 5% total).
  • When booking a hotel through Chase Travel this quarter, it would earn 1%, plus 4% (because hotels are a rotating bonus category), plus another 4% (because Chase Travel bookings are a bonus category).

2. 5% cash back on Lyft rides

Chase credit cards often come with partner offers, and this one is no exception. The Chase Freedom Flex® earns 5% back on Lyft rides through March 31, 2025. That's one of the highest rates you can get for ride-hailing services.

3. Three months of DashPass and Instacart+

If you're interested in trying out food delivery apps, this card has two more partner offers that could be useful:

  • Complimentary three months of DashPass: Get $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees on eligible orders with DoorDash and Caviar. Must activate by Dec. 31, 2024.
  • Complimentary three months of Instacart+: Get $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees on eligible Instacart orders. Must enroll by July 31, 2024.

Both these memberships auto-renew. After your three months of DashPass are up, you're automatically enrolled in it at 50% off for the next nine months. After the complimentary Instacart+ period ends, you're automatically enrolled in an annual membership. You can cancel the automatic renewal on these at any time, though.

4. The opportunity to move points to another Chase card

While the Chase Freedom Flex® is a cash back card, it technically earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points. These are worth $0.01 per point in cash back. And if this is the only Chase card you have, then redeeming points for cash back makes sense.

But if you also have a Chase travel card, you can use your points for travel, too. Let's say you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. That card has a couple of redemption options that the Chase Freedom Flex® doesn't:

  • Transfer points to Chase travel partners: Chase is partnered with over a dozen airlines and hotels, including United, Southwest, and Hyatt.
  • Book travel at an elevated rate: When you use points from the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card to book travel through Chase, you get a value of $0.0125 per point. With the Chase Freedom Flex®, you only get $0.01 per point.

So, if you've earned 25,000 points on your Chase Freedom Flex®, you could redeem them as $250 cash back. Or, if you also have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you could move your points to it. There, those same 25,000 points would be worth $312.50 for bookings made in Chase's travel portal. You could also transfer your points from that card to Chase's airline and hotel partners.

Just like other top credit cards, the Chase Freedom Flex® has a few features that get most of the attention. They aren't the only ones that can save you money, though, so take advantage of those little-known benefits, too.
