Here's Why We're Not At All Concerned With ARS Pharmaceuticals' (NASDAQ:SPRY) Cash Burn Situation

Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. By way of example, ARS Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:SPRY) has seen its share price rise 377% over the last year, delighting many shareholders. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.

In light of its strong share price run, we think now is a good time to investigate how risky ARS Pharmaceuticals' cash burn is. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

Does ARS Pharmaceuticals Have A Long Cash Runway?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. As at June 2024, ARS Pharmaceuticals had cash of US$219m and no debt. Importantly, its cash burn was US$44m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of about 4.9 years from June 2024. Importantly, though, analysts think that ARS Pharmaceuticals will reach cashflow breakeven before then. If that happens, then the length of its cash runway, today, would become a moot point. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.

How Is ARS Pharmaceuticals' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

In our view, ARS Pharmaceuticals doesn't yet produce significant amounts of operating revenue, since it reported just US$500k in the last twelve months. As a result, we think it's a bit early to focus on the revenue growth, so we'll limit ourselves to looking at how the cash burn is changing over time. While it hardly paints a picture of imminent growth, the fact that it has reduced its cash burn by 21% over the last year suggests some degree of prudence. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

Can ARS Pharmaceuticals Raise More Cash Easily?

While ARS Pharmaceuticals is showing a solid reduction in its cash burn, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

ARS Pharmaceuticals has a market capitalisation of US$1.6b and burnt through US$44m last year, which is 2.8% of the company's market value. So it could almost certainly just borrow a little to fund another year's growth, or else easily raise the cash by issuing a few shares.

How Risky Is ARS Pharmaceuticals' Cash Burn Situation?

It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way ARS Pharmaceuticals is burning through its cash. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. On this analysis its cash burn reduction was its weakest feature, but we are not concerned about it. Shareholders can take heart from the fact that analysts are forecasting it will reach breakeven. Taking all the factors in this report into account, we're not at all worried about its cash burn, as the business appears well capitalized to spend as needs be. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 3 warning signs for ARS Pharmaceuticals (1 is concerning!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
