因侵犯数据加密专利，西部数据被判赔3.157亿美元
IT之家 10 月 20 日消息，据路透社报道，美国加州联邦法院的一个陪审团裁定，西部数据因侵犯 SPEX Technologies 拥有的数据加密技术专利，需赔偿 3.157 亿美元（IT之家备注：当前约 22.46 亿元人民币）。该专利最初由 Spyrus 公司开发，涉及 PCMCIA 和 Compact Flash 设备的数据加密技术，后由 SPEX Technologies 收购。
该案件可以追溯到 2016 年，当时 SPEX Technologies 起诉西部数据，指控其多款自加密存储设备侵犯了 Spyrus 公司研发的两项专利，专利编号分别为 US6088802A 和 US6003135A。这些专利主要涵盖了外部设备与主机进行数据安全通信的技术，用于执行一项或多项安全操作，确保主机存储的数据安全。这两项专利最早申请于 1997 年，虽然在 2017 年已过期，但由于诉讼是在专利到期前提起，因此案件得以继续审理。
西部数据对这一裁决表示强烈反对，并否认存在任何专利侵权行为。公司计划通过审后动议继续抗辩，如有必要还将提起上诉。
这并非西部数据首次面临此类法律纠纷，就在今年 7 月，同一加州法院的另一陪审团裁定，西部数据因侵犯硬盘存储容量相关专利需支付超过 2.62 亿美元（当前约 18.64 亿元人民币）的赔偿。
