Axcelis Technologies' (NASDAQ:ACLS) five-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth

It hasn't been the best quarter for Axcelis Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:ACLS) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 21% in that time. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. We think most investors would be happy with the 293% return, over that period. To some, the recent pullback wouldn't be surprising after such a fast rise. The more important question is whether the stock is too cheap or too expensive today. While the long term returns are impressive, we do have some sympathy for those who bought more recently, given the 34% drop, in the last year.

Although Axcelis Technologies has shed US$124m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Axcelis Technologies achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 58% per year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 32% over the same period. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company. This cautious sentiment is reflected in its (fairly low) P/E ratio of 11.73.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 33% in the last year, Axcelis Technologies shareholders lost 34%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 32% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Axcelis Technologies (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about.
