TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) said the construction of the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) project, or seawall, in North Jakarta’s Kalibaru area, is an effort to improve the quality of life of local residents. He said this is in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directives and is expected to benefit 1,600 families who rely on fishing for their livelihoods.

“We are thinking further ahead so that infrastructure development can truly empower the residents, and we hope that this will lead to economic improvement,” AHY said during his visit to Kalibaru, North Jakarta, on Monday, November 4, 2024.

During the inspection, AHY observed the fishermen's boats docked along the seawall. He noted that the smaller vessels, typically around 5 GT, are well-suited to the seawall's structural 

“The seawall is designed to accommodate smaller fishing boats. Larger vessels, such as those exceeding 30 GT, could potentially compromise the structure,” he explained.

In addition to aiming to boost the economy, AHY is deeply concerned about the coastal communities in North Jakarta, which are frequently threatened by flooding exacerbated by ongoing land subsidence.

“In some areas, the land is subsiding by as much as 10 centimeters per year. If no action is taken, this can be dangerous. It means we are making efforts to save human lives,” he stressed.

The seawall is planned to be 4.8 meters above the water surface, offering significant protection against flooding. However, AHY recognizes that this alone is insufficient. A comprehensive approach, including polder systems and retention ponds, is essential to effectively manage water levels during heavy rainfall. 

“These additional measures will help to regulate water levels and minimize flood risks,” he added.

He mentioned that these efforts are in line with steps to prevent excessive groundwater use. For decades, the community has relied on groundwater, so the government is working to secure alternative water sources.

“That's why we are ensuring that the regional drinking water supply system (SPAM) Jatiluhur can provide a supply of approximately 3,200 liters per second, and we are also striving for Krian from Banten to soon start production,” he said.

During the visit, AHY also appointed Dody Hanggodo as Minister of Public Works. He reiterated his commitment to future development projects that prioritize safety and quality of life for the community.
