Graphjet Technology (GTI) said Tuesday that it has started operations at its first commercial-scale agricultural waste-to-graphite facility in Malaysia.

The company said the facility has the capacity to produce up to 3,000 metric tons of battery-grade graphite per year by recycling up to 9,000 metric tons of palm kernel shells.

Graphjet said the facility's annual graphite output can support battery production for about 40,000 electric vehicles annually.

The facility is expected to support 200 employees, the company added.

Graphjet said it has received its first shipment of palm kernel shells and has started shipping green graphite product samples to customers.
