KEY POINTS
Consumers are expected to spend more than $900 each this holiday shopping season, according to the National Retail Federation.
If you're anything like me, the first thing you think about when you see that figure is: "Man, that could earn a good sign-up bonus."
For example, if you're going to spend even half as much as the expected average, consider opening a new Chase Freedom Flex® card. Its welcome bonus could put a big dent in your holiday shopping bill.

This card is like a choose-your-own-adventure game, giving you some say in how you earn, so you can adapt it to your own rewards strategy. I also like that you can choose a new category each month, making it easy to adapt it to holiday shopping now, then something more useful in the new year. (P.S. This is one of our top picks for earning rewards at Costco.)

This is your card if you want to maximize every dollar spent on the thousands of cookies, tons of turkey, and gallons of gravy -- which all mean yards of receipts from the grocery store. The welcome offer does require a bit of spending, but you have twice the time to do it in, and the bonus categories are easy to make the most of year-round.
While some folks certainly open new cards just for the welcome offer, it's always best to choose a card that you know you can use all year long. So think about the holes you need to fill in your current card rewards strategy, so you can make a choice that will keep paying off.
