Xiaomi (HKG:1810, HKG:81810) is designing its own mobile processor to reduce its reliance on foreign suppliers like Qualcomm and MediaTek, South China Morning Post reported, according to unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
The mass production of these chips designed in-house will likely begin in 2025, according to people familiar with the matter, SCMP said.
The push for self-reliance mainly stems from US restrictions on China's acquisition of chips, related technologies, and personnel. The US is also pressuring TSMC to minimize its deliveries to China. Xiaomi did not comment not comment, SCMP said.
