American Eagle Sees Activewear as Long-Term Growth Engine -- Market Talk

1058 ET - American Eagle Outfitters' commentary on active wear apparel shows the landscape is changing and portends potential trouble for companies like Lululemon that's working to staunch a slowdown in its women's business. The apparel retailer on a call with analysts Thursday talked up recent wins in the nascent business, with activewear seen as one of its two strongest long-term growth engines. President Jennifer Foyle says the Offline active wear brand is bringing in new customers amid a first ever marketing effort. "We're now seeing record highs in our legging business and our sports bra business," Foyle says. Shares tumbled 15% to $17.57 after trimming its sales outlook for the year, on pace for its largest percentage decrease in over a year. (denny.jacob@wsj.com; @pennedbyden)
