经过25年的谈判，欧盟和南方共同市场（Mercosur countries）五个成员国（巴西、阿根廷、巴拉圭、乌拉圭和新加入的玻利维亚）于12月6日达成了一项备受期待的贸易协议。

　　分析人士表示，锂的战略重要性可能在上述重磅协议中发挥了重要作用。

　　如果得到欧盟27国的批准，欧盟-南方共同市场伙伴关系将创建世界上最大的自由贸易区之一，估计覆盖超过7亿人口，约占全球GDP（国内生产总值）的20%。

　　欧盟执行机构欧盟委员会（European Commission）表示，该贸易协定旨在增加双边贸易和投资，降低关税和非关税贸易壁垒，制定更稳定的规则，并促进诸如可持续发展等共同价值观。

　　然而，并非所有欧盟国家都赞成该协议。法国和波兰等国表示反对该协议，警告称该协议可能会给欧洲农业带来不公平的竞争。

　　荷兰荷兰国际集团（ING）的分析师表示，尽管锂等关键原材料对欧洲经济未来很重要，但这种金属在自由贸易协定的报道中的重要性似乎“较少成为头条新闻”。
