Publicis and WPP Could See Short-Term Gain, Long-Term Pain From Rivals' Deal -- Market Talk

0713 GMT - Publicis Groupe and WPP could benefit in the short term from a proposed tie-up between U.S. rivals Omnicom Group and Interpublic Group, AlphaValue's Helene Coumes says in a note. Omnicom's $13 billion acquisition of Interpublic is set to create the world's biggest advertising firm by revenue. Potential cost savings seem to be the main driver behind the deal, AlphaValue says. In the near term, the deal could deteriorate customer retentions and lead to a lack of effectiveness in the pitches to the benefit of competitors Publics and WPP, the analyst says. However, the competitive pressure could be higher for Publics and WPP once the integration is completed, according to Coumes. (adria.calatayud@wsj.com)
