Avangrid said it would expand its use of hybrid bucket trucks, purchasing over 130 over the next three years, as it works toward its goal of converting 60% of its heavy-duty fleet to alternative-energy sources by 2030.

The company said that, while it already employs hybrid vehicles, the latest plan represents a significant expansion of its use of alternative-energy sources.

The hybrid vehicles, which use a diesel engine while driving, only need electricity to operate their bucket lift. This allows workers to shut the trucks' engines when working on power lines, eliminating exposure to exhaust fumes, according to the company.

The sustainable-energy company also said it is working toward growing its use of green fuels.

Avangrid is a member of the Iberdrola Group.
