Investors in Sea Have Seen Strong Returns of 195% over the past Five Years

When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. Long term Sea Limited (NYSE:SE) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 195% in five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 44% gain in the last three months.

So let's assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 5 years and see if they've moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.

We don't think that Sea's modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.

In the last 5 years Sea saw its revenue grow at 32% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. Meanwhile, its share price performance certainly reflects the strong growth, given the share price grew at 24% per year, compound, during the period. So it seems likely that buyers have paid attention to the strong revenue growth. To our minds that makes Sea worth investigating - it may have its best days ahead.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Sea has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 191% in the last twelve months. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 24%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term.
