South32 claims alumina win as WA minister backs Worsley expansion

Mining giant South32 has received the tentative backing of Western Australia’s environment minister to extend the life of its Worsley Alumina project, overruling some objections raised by the state’s environmental watchdog.

WA’s Environmental Protection Agency had sought to restrict South32’s plan to extend bauxite mining in the state’s jarrah forests to create feedstock for the Worsley alumina refinery, as part of the state government’s stricter approach to environmental approvals.
