Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has expressed worries about user privacy, alleging Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) is looking for broad access to its running software as part of European Union initiatives to improve interoperability among tech products.
Under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the executive body of the 27-nation blocthe European Commissionis developing interoperability rules. This is their new digital competition framework. The guidelines seek to guarantee flawless compatibility between Apple's iOS system and outside features or devices such wireless file sharing and wearables.
Apple voiced concern about interoperability rules allowing businesses with dubious data practices access to private customer information. It particularly mentioned Meta, highlighting at least 15 requests for access to Apple's technologies that, should they be approved, may jeopardize privacy measures.
Published Wednesday, the suggested rules reflect the EU's larger attempt to limit Big Tech companies' hegemony and advance fair competition in digital marketplaces. Neither Meta nor the European Commission have officially addressed Apple's assertions.
