BUZZ-Australian energy stocks see worst year since 2020 despite December gains

** The S&P/ASX 200 Energy sub-index .AXEJ has fallen 19.21% YTD to 8,141.3, seeing its worst trading year since 2020

** However, the sub-index has rebounded from year low seen on Dec. 20, gaining 5.7% over six consecutive sessions

** Sub-index constituent Woodside Energy WDS.AX has fallen 21.2% this year, while peer Santos STO.AX is down 12.4% YTD

** Underlying brent crude LCOc1 is down as much as 3.4% this year

** Sub-index underperforms broader index .AXJO, up 8.5% this year, by 10.7 percentage points
