Rep. Tim Burchett (R., Tenn.) intoned on X just as voting was about to get under way: "This will go to multiple rounds." Burchett was one of the eight Republicans who voted to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) and is sitting in the back of the chamber near other conservative critics of incumbent speaker Mike Johnson: Reps. Andy Biggs (R., Ariz.), Eli Crane and Chip Roy (R., Texas).
Those members didn't stand when most other Republicans rose to give Johnson standing ovations when he was nominated.
