Xcel Energy's Monticello Plant Gets Federal Approval to Operate Until 2050

Xcel Energy (XEL) said Thursday that its Monticello nuclear plant recently got license renewal by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The federal approval allows the plant to operate for an extra 20 years, until 2050, as long as state regulators also approve, the company said, adding that the renewal came after a multi-year review process by the Commission.

The company said it plans to seek state approval to extend the plant's operation for the full 20 years. It has already received approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission to extend operations until 2040 and will later request approval for the additional 10 years.
