There's no doubt that investing in the stock market is a truly brilliant way to build wealth. But if when you choose to buy stocks, some of them will be below average performers. For example, the WEC Energy Group, Inc. (NYSE:WEC), share price is up over the last year, but its gain of 13% trails the market return. Zooming out, the stock is actually down 3.0% in the last three years.

So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last year, WEC Energy Group actually saw its earnings per share drop 5.5%.

So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Indeed, when EPS is declining but the share price is up, it often means the market is considering other factors.

WEC Energy Group's revenue actually dropped 7.6% over last year. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for WEC Energy Group the TSR over the last 1 year was 17%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

WEC Energy Group shareholders gained a total return of 17% during the year. But that was short of the market average. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 3% per year over five year. It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for WEC Energy Group (of which 1 is significant!) you should know about.
