The International Brotherhood of Teamsters said more than 430 of it members are preparing to strike against Sysco in Houston, with the two sides unable to come to an agreement and the labor's current contract expiring on Jan. 17.

The foodservice company rejected the union's health care proposal and proposed minimal raises for its members, who are underpaid compared with those at other Sysco facilities, the union said Monday. Teamsters Local 988 President Robert Mele said the union has been bargaining in good faith for months, and that management's proposed wage package doesn't reflect the value of its members hard work.

Sysco said they have been bargaining in good faith and that they have offered to pay a larger percentage of health benefits, and decrease coverage costs, while still providing a package with multiple options.

Local 988 members make deliveries of food and other products to schools, hospitals, and major restaurant chains in the Houston area, the union said.
