Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Mixed in Afternoon Trading

Consumer stocks were mixed Tuesday afternoon with the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) little changed, paring earlier losses, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) up 0.6%.

In corporate news, Signet Jewelers (SIG) lowered its fiscal Q4 sales outlook as more customers opted for lower-priced fashion gift options than anticipated during the key holiday season. The shares slumped 22%.

Southwest Airlines (LUV) is pausing all noncontract internal and external hiring. The shares rose 1.5%.

Vera Bradley (VRA) announced a cost-efficiency initiative aimed at cutting expenses by $20 million annually, starting in fiscal 2026. The shares gained 2.9%.
