GlobalFoundries (GFS) said Friday that it plans to establish a new center for advanced packaging and testing of US-made essential chips within its manufacturing facility in New York, with funding support from the state government and the US Department of Commerce.

The company said New York state will provide up to $20 million in funding for the center, while the US Department of Commerce will provide up to $75 million.

GlobalFoundries said it also expects to invest $575 million in the center, plus an additional $186 million for research and development over the next 10 years or so. The project is expected to create about 100 new full-time jobs over the next five years, the company added.

According to GlobalFoundries, the new center is intended to expand its advanced packaging capabilities and provide customers with an end-to-end, US-based solution for chips made at its New York manufacturing facility.
