Structural Monitoring Systems (ASX:SMN) said the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved and issued the final certification plan to Boeing, in relation to the certification process for its aft pressure bulkhead sensor technology, according to a Monday Australian bourse filing.

Boeing's submission of the full-service bulletin and compliance report to the FAA and a final approval and certification from the FAA for this application are the only remaining steps in the process.

Structural Monitoring Systems achieved full technical approval of the sensor technology within Boeing, but the agency required concurrent inspections using low-frequency eddy current technology every 2,400 cycles until sufficient operational data is gathered.

Boeing is working with a major operator of older 737 classic aircraft to collect additional data and Structural Monitoring Systems is supplying the necessary kits to support this.

Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines confirmed its commitment to install the sensors across its fleet of 71 aircraft subject to inspection requirements. Structural Monitoring Systems is also preparing sensor kits for United Airlines' aft pressure bulkhead sensor trial, expected to begin in January.

The firm's shares jumped 11% on Monday's close.
