EnerSys said Friday it finalized a $199 million award from the Department of Energy, which will support construction of a lithium-ion cell production facility in Greenville, South Carolina.

The new 500,000 square foot facility is set to produce advanced lithium-ion cells for applications across commercial, industrial, and defense end markets. Construction is expected to begin this year, and commercial production is slated to begin in 2028.

EnerSys said the new factory will support the needs of customers including the U.S. Department of Defense, which has specific requirements for domestically sourced batteries.
